πŸ‘„ Mouth Taping Is Everywhere. Here's What I Tell My Patients.

You've probably seen it online: people putting tape over their lips before bed to help with snoring, sleep, energy, and even their jawline. I get asked about it almost every week.

πŸ“± What the research says

A study published this summer looked at almost 400 Instagram reels about mouth taping. Nearly all of them promoted it, and most came from accounts selling something. Most of the claims you see online haven't been backed by research. A few small studies show it may help snoring in some people with mild sleep apnea, and other studies found no benefit.

🀧 Why this matters in October

Fall in Western New York brings colds, allergies, and stuffy noses. Your mouth is your backup airway. Taping it shut when your nose is blocked can make breathing harder.

πŸ” The better question: why is the mouth open?

Nose breathing really is better for us, but tape only holds the lips closed. It doesn't fix the reason they open. That reason is often a low-resting tongue, weak lip muscles, a nose that isn't working well, or plain habit.

Myofunctional therapy works on those root causes. I help kids and adults retrain the tongue, lips, and face so that nose breathing becomes natural, both day and night. πŸŒ™

⚠️ Check with a provider first

Please talk to your doctor or dentist before trying tape, especially if you're often congested, if you snore loudly or gasp in your sleep, or if it's for a child.

πŸ’¬ Curious about the "why" for you or your child?

A short Guidance Call is a simple place to start.
